Since I started playing guitar I’ve always loved the sound of transparent, amp like overdrive and there are hundreds of different variations of these pedals on the market. From the early days of Stevie Ray Vaughan’s TS808 Tube Screamer to more modern circuits found in pre amp and amp emulation pedals, that illusive tone has always been at the core of so many genres. There are dozens of manufacturers around the world producing what they refer to as a ‘transparent’ overdrive and to my ear, very few come anywhere close to the sound of the Walrus Audio Voyager.
Still very young company, through their short time in the pedal game they have made a huge name for themselves with their originality and complete innovation in time based and modulation effects. Having owned a couple of their now legendary pedals for a few years I was eager to see what the Voyager had to offer. With three simple controls, ‘volume’, ‘gain’ and ‘tone’, this pedal adds so much clarity and dynamic even on its lowest settings. It has quickly become my always-on go to “green pedal” of choice for most sets I play and is capable of delivering those raspy blues tones all the way to fully saturated overdrive with ease. The tone control is incredibly reactive and sensitive to even the slightest adjustment which is very handy when recording or trying to dial in an amp like sound. Walrus have really impressed me with this pedal, I can confidently say it’s the best and most diverse overdrive pedal I have ever used and will stay on my board for years to come. I would recommend this to any overdrive fan or anybody looking for that perfect clean boost to add some sparkle and grit to their core tone. An astoundingly beautiful addition to anyone’s pedalboard. Hats off to Walrus!
