As a long time D’Addario string user, I was recently sent a set of their new, Nickel Bronze acoustic guitar strings to try. Normally I use their 80/20 bronze custom light strings. On removing the strings from the pack the first obvious difference is they look like electric guitar strings in colour.
After fitting the set of Nickel Bronze custom lights the guitar was definitely brighter sounding but without a hint of trebly thinness, still having plenty of bottom end depth. The tone was balanced evenly across all the strings. I felt they tonally sounded like a clean electric guitar sound plugged into a really good compressor, but with all the sustain of the bronze acoustic strings I normally use.
If your after darker or warmer jazz sounds these wouldn’t be suitable for that, but if you like a nice full but bright sound its definitely worth trying them out. They come in extra light to medium string gauges letting you have the feel of the gauge you normally use but with the different tone.
