Phase 90 MXR pedal review

The Phase 90 by MXR is a reissue of the classic effect made famous by Eddie Van Halen. The effect has a single control which controls the speed, this will take you from slow swirls all the way to full on psychedelic madness.

When switched on the effect runs at line level. It can be powered by 9v battery or 9v power supply. It is housed in the classic orange standard size pedal format, and like all MXR pedals is built like a tank!

On a clean amp with a Strat it gives your funk chops some mojo and on a driven amp will give serious depth to your solos. A favourite of stellar guitarist Paul Gilbert (Mr Big) who uses the effect instead of a wah pedal on his solos. He always keeps a few spares for on the road too.

Personally I like to use the effect at slower speeds on a clean sound with the speed control set to around nine o clock on the dial, then crank the speed to two o clock for driven solos. At full speed the effect becomes almost robotic, with a metallic sound. This is a perfect addition to any pedal board, the Phase 90 gives sonic colour to your sound.
